Botox & Lip Fillers

What is Botox?
Botox allows patients to have a more youthful and rested appearance with the use of Botulinum Toxin. This is an FDA-approved treatment that can help facial expression lines or wrinkles virtually disappear. The most commonly treated areas are the frown lines located between the lines, crow’s feet on the outer corners of the eyes, and forehead wrinkles. Botox is primarily a diluted, controlled solution that is injected into the muscles with a very thin needle. It is relatively painless and will provide a softening of harsh and visible lines in the face.

What is the procedure like?
Botox is administered by diluting it in a powder form into saline and injecting it directly into the targeted area. Injecting the product into the muscles responsible for the movement that creates lines and wrinkles will cause them to relax. This will encourage the production of smoother skin in the affected areas.

It takes about 1-3 days for Botox to fully take effect, but the process can be done in just a few minutes. It is also recommended that the patient avoids anti-inflammatory medications should be stopped two weeks before receiving Botox treatment in order to avoid bruising. The procedure is about 15 minutes and the results will last about 3-5 months.

What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are a minimally invasive procedure that is used to plump lips, enhance shallow contours of the face, soften facial creases, remove wrinkles, and improve the appearance of scars. Dermal fillers typically consist of collagen, hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, or polylactic acid. Different forms of dermal fillers serve different purposes. Consult with your dentist to find out what type of dermal filler would best suit your needs. Getting dermal fillers is a really simple procedure that only requires about 15-30 minutes to complete. Fillers will typically last you about 6 months to a year.

How are cosmetic treatments used in Dentistry?
Botox has several important uses in dentistry that can aid with chronic TMJ, bruxism cases, facial pain, and severe migraines. Botox can also be used as a minimally invasive alternative to surgically treating high lip line cases, and lip augmentation. Denture patients who have trouble adjusting to new dentures may also find the use of botox helpful. In some rare cases, Botox can be used in orthodontic cases where retraining of the facial muscles may be necessary.

Can a Dentist inject Botox and dermal fillers?
Yes, most dentists already have experience administering anesthetic injections in the same areas where Botox and dermal fillers are injected for cosmetic results. The main difference is that you inject botox intraorally into these facial structures while Botox and dermal filler injections are extraoral injections. Dentists inject anesthetic regularly and are fully knowledgeable on how to make these injections safe and comfortable.

Botox and dermal fillers are serious procedures which involve some risk and not every patient is an appropriate candidate. Consult with your dentist to find out if you would be a good candidate for this type of procedure.
